Our Expertise

At Archaeology England we believe the best services we can offer potential clients are those backed-up by local expertise and experience. Therefore, we use local archaeologists wherever possible, making sure they are always supported by experienced project managers operating from our bases in Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol.

For projects still in the design stage, we have Heritage Consultants with the experience and expertise to guide clients through the processes of assessing the impact of their proposals on the potential archaeological resource (both below-ground and extant standing remains), negotiating with local authorities, and designing mitigation strategies.

Where an archaeological survey or intrusive fieldwork is required, we have specialists in all the skills a potential client might be looking from, from metal-detector and photographic surveys to the excavation of specific site types such as brown-field developments or waterlogged peat upland.

All our reports have a well-earned reputation for quality, thoroughness and objectivity.

The diversity of the work we carry out continues to grow. Our in-house finds skills include specialisms in paleo-environmental archaeology, human remains, flint artefacts, pottery and glass. We have our own specialist surveying and geophysics equipment, our own finds and environmental processing facilities, and areas dedicated to the analysis and storage of artefact, ecofacts and human remains. Our archaeologists have worked in partnership with colleagues at several universities and we have close working relationships with a number of independent specialists.
